Prestigious Japanese Laboratory (AIST) uses POWERLASE Technology to gain World leading results in Advanced Femtosecond Laser

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) purchased POWERLASE AO2/G lasers to enable the development of the sub-micron surface analysis technique, EUPS, and to power the development of laser-produced plasmas.

Using POWERLASE AO2/G AIST have produced a 10-kHz repetition-rate Ti:S femtosecond laser, which has given world leading results detailed in the well known and highly respected "Optics Letters".

POWERLASE Limited, manufacturers of the world's most powerful, nanosecond Q-switched, diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers, announces today that the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has purchased Starlase AO2/G lasers to advance the development of applications in laser-produced plasma (LPP).

This latest announcement is a further demonstration of POWERLASE’s expansion into the Asian market. The deal follows a recent distribution agreement with the Japan Laser Corporation, which allows the promotion of the entire AO Starlase range.

The AO2/G is a development of the AO2 (200 Watt) laser from POWERLASE. It addresses a variety of material processing requirements and has the highest power in its class. Additionally, the Green (G) version has a number of unique features including the ability to vary the repetition speed, pulse energy and M² variance, allowing for a wide variety of tests and different parameters.  The Powerlase lasers have enabled the Japanese research laboratory to achieve a world record-breaking Ti:S femtosecond laser performance.

Company comments

Commenting on the deal, Toshihisa Tomie, at AIST says; “We needed a pump laser that emits power exceeding 80W with an outstanding beam quality of M² around 20 or better to up-grade a LPP light source in our EUPS system.  EUPS is ultra-sensitive to impurities and defects on surface and interface, and I believe it will become a must analytical technique in developing nano-materials and -devices.

The POWERLASE AO2/G was an obvious choice as it offers a highly flexible configuration base. Using POWERLASE technology, we’ve managed to realise a 10-kHz repetition-rate Ti:S femtosecond laser, which has exceeded the previous world’s best performance by over 250%. This technology will open up also a new horizon in materials processing.”

Tony King, POWERLASE Chief Executive Officer concludes; “We are very pleased AIST has chosen our lasers to fulfil its research needs. We have worked very hard across our entire range of lasers to ensure they have both the highest power in their class, and also the capacity to adapt to a wide variety of materials processing requirements, as the AO2/G has been for AIST. The deal also demonstrates the continuation of close working relationships with key market players in Japan.”

About AIST

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is led by President Dr. Yoshikawa.  AIST was established in 2001 by merging several national laboratories, which have been contributing to society through continuous advancement in technologies and supporting Japanese industries since 1876.

With Headquarters located in Tsukuba and Tokyo, AIST has over 50 autonomous research units in various innovative research fields, and the units are located at 9 research bases and several sites across Japan.  About 2500 research scientists and well over 3000 visiting scientists, post doctoral fellows and students are working at AIST.

Dr.Tomie’s group is world-widely known for its research on applications of LPP.  Present purchase of AO2/G is for a source of the group’s invented technology EUPS (EUV excited photoelectron spectroscopy) for surface analysis.  It is also developing technologies to implement its unique scheme LPP as a source for EUV lithography at high volume stage.
